Spiritual Worlds of Experience - Self-Optimisation, Wellbeing and Therapy

Spiritual Worlds of Experience - Self-Optimisation, Wellbeing and Therapy is a combination of different research settings which all aim to investigate the confluences and interdependencies between so-called religion(s) and so-called popular culture(s). The metaphor Worlds of Experience wants to emphasise the reception and action-orientated approach, which places the producers and recipients of religious and spiritual experience-attractions at the centre of attention. This approach decodes the performative communication process, in which the actors and objects position themselves and create sensory and cognitive meanings. Thereby the project will investigate the question as to how far the materialisation of religious and spiritual semantics in distinctive habitual consumer goods influences contemporary religiosity. Also, the project will ask in what way this is evidence for the multifunctionality of religious material culture.
