Doctoral Studies at the Institute for Religious Studies

A doctorate at the in Institute for Religious Studies at Heidelberg University leads to the title Doctor of Philosophy (Dr. phil.) and usually takes three years. In order to register a doctoral project a M.A. in religious studies is usually required.

Completing a PhD proves the candidate's capability to work independently on an academic project. The presentation of an academic paper (Dissertation) and completion of an oral examination (Disputation) in the subject religious studies are mandatory.

At the Institute for Religious Studies doctoral projects are supervised by Prof. Dr. Gregor Ahn, Prof. Dr. Inken Prohl and Prof. Dr. Michael Bergunder. After consultation with the supervisor a doctoral agreement is made, which outlines the topic and duration of the doctoral project.

The doctoral project is registered via the Faculty of Philosophy at Heidelberg University. Before the doctorate can begin, the prospective doctoral candidate must complete the acceptance procedure of the Faculty of Philosophy and enrol as a doctoral student.
